Mystic/New London Question

Postby Slack Tide » Thu Feb 02, 2012 8:49 am

Hi guys,
Long Island season's over, time to make the wife happy, so I was thinking about taking the ferry over for an overnight in Mystic...
I am looking for a good, centrally located place to stay for a night or so.
Also, good beer joint, family food place suggestions and any other tips would help.
I've been there on business, but not with a 16 month old.. so it's a little different.
There is still plenty to do and see walking around even though it's the off season right??
Thanks Boys,
Slack

I live very close to Mystic and frequent the area establishments, below are some suggestions.

Plenty of brand name chain hotels in Mystic just a short drive from town close to I-95. The Whalers inn is located right in town but is a bit expensive.

Restaurants I recommend.
Fancy: Bravo Bravo, Anthony J's Bistro, S & P Oyster Company, FloodTide. All first class places with good bar atmosphere.
Family: Margaritas, Mystic Pizza, steak loft, Go-Fish, Equinox Diner.

Plenty to do in the off season:
Aquarium, Olde Mystic Seaport, Mystic village, Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, Nautilus submarine, The Mashantucket Pequot Museum
Thousands on the boat.
Hundreds on decoys.
Time away from the wife....priceless

It is a pretty good family region. I grew up in Groton and lived in Mystic for a few years. There are quite a few hotels in New London, Mystic, and Groton (Mystic is a borough of Groton, in case you didn't know). The Mystic Marriot will probably put you most central, as it is close to both casinos as well. There is the Nautilus Museum, Aquarium, Seaport, Pequot Museum, Old Mystic Village, Cabela's (about an hour away), Casinos, Dinosaur Museum (not too sure what they have. Google Nauture's Art). The ferry will cost over $100 round trip. Each way is about 1 hour and 20 min. The downtown mystic area has a lot of dining. There really aren't any terrible restaurants down there. Mystic Pizza is decent, but don't go there for the pizza. New London and Groton both have good places, also. Olio's in Groton, Tony D's in New London. As well as many chain restaurants in the area like Chili's, 99, Outback Steakhouse, Longhorn Steakhouse, etc.

Just to add, there is a lot of construction going on to the Mystic Drawbridge and the downtown area is all torn up. I'm not sure if this has any bearing on your plans but it will add a bit of a traffic factor. There are plenty of bars down there, too. Be sure to hit the Harp and Hound on Pearl St. Its a little place but traditional Irish Pub. The Riverwalk on Holmes St. also has a good restaurant/bar.
