Anyone hunt this past Saturday?

Postby UGADawg » Mon Jan 14, 2013 11:29 am

Hunted Saturday in *a local marsh. It was the slowest morning I have ever experienced in this particular marsh. Some shooting early, but not much. Anyone else get out? I'm interested to see what your day was like as ours was very slow.

I got a couple jumping them while hunting pheasants. I do real well after the season closes up here. I hardly ever see another hunter and the lead really smacks them

My buddy and I made it out Saturday afternoon. Didn't see many and managed to down one. Buddy went after it, found it as it surfaced, blasted it, and never saw it again.

After shooting light the marsh FILLED with ducks and geese.

That and 23 pounds of mud all over everything is all we got for our troubles.

Slowest morning Ever on the coast tides were super high, very little goose and puddler movement if at any for hours at a time 5 buffiesand some sea ducks way of in distance. at 1 pm we got 3 brant on the dropping tide and called it a day, geese and puddlers are all over central ct and heavy all the places I stopped on Sunday. who sets these season dates I can't complain but it would be nice to start later and at least hunt north zone until the 20th or even first of February

Congrats, you must have had a great day. Any pics?

I'm guessing you put in at Birdseye and you must have hunted all day because I don't think I heard but 25 shots until 9:30 and half of them were from the Milford side.

i hunted sat morning....went out of branford...went to a place we saw a lot of widgeon thursday afternoon...still a low enough tide in the morning...but the black ducks and the widgeon were a total no show... set bluebills off one side of the rocks and puddlers on the other... 25 bluebills came into the area, and parked themselves 400 yards out...

we left at 11 without fireing a shot....

Gotcha. So to be clear you said you had full limits at the marsh (after naming the marsh specifically). Then you harass me for talking about streets and say specifically that you sat on your couch, didn't hunt, and clearly lied about limiting?

Nice.

Cool looking bird.

Didn't get out Saturday but Friday afternoon. Same differance except for the day. I'd say slow, saw maybe half dozen birds. Had 2 lager dark birds come over my left shoulder pretty low - had a saftey shot and by the time I recovered they saw movment shifted and beyond range. Did mange to get a hen mallard with about 6 minutes of legal shooting. I winged it and spent 20 minutes searching and chasing the thing around the mud till i caught it.

02fish, new moon this past weekend. -1.20 on the tide chart for low tide. I encountered super low water and LOTS! of mud.

Tool, nice suggestion on the callin in a previous post. Wail at the tail when calling. I read that before, but as being new, one forgets. Also I caught myself fading out at the end of the wail instead of getting stronger. Maybe coincidence for the same bird, but I wailled at the tail, got stronger and then shut it off as the bird turned, within 30 seconds that bird came right in for a landing with my deeks that were barely floating. Came in over left shoulder but manged to get turned as the bird also did and went down on a shot but winged it.

Remember the basics

Three of us shot four drake GEs and a hen all over the decoys before deciding to go shoot OS. That was a mistake. Only picked up a few. Unlike the week before, they were not interested in the dekes. TONS of brant... shot three.

Pops is a fixture on the boat, at least until he gets to old to shoot.
Brants were all over the place last week, should have set up closer to the island, would have cleaned up.
