Ruddy Ducks?

Postby SquadIrons » Fri Jan 18, 2013 6:49 pm

Anyone ever shoot a ruddy duck around here? I shot one this morning and had a few others swimming around me all day. I have never seen these in person before and found it interesting. The coloration was dull, though. Certainly did not look like the late season plumage that many other birds have.

I shot one last year on a lake. Watched it fall so we paddled over to it and it dove pretty deep. I could see it swimming under water, and it stayed there for a few minutes but when it came up it was about another 50 yards away! The second shot wasn't too forgiving. I don't think ill shoot another one though, or at least TRY not to.

I see them often in january on the sound...they dont fly around much...but very occassionaly youll get one to fly in. But more times than not they happen to swim in...the drakes are seldom in nice color during the season...
