out with a newer member here today

Postby toolmaker » Wed Jan 15, 2014 4:42 pm

I took Cedar Creek Sam out on the CT coast today for a mixed bag...half day hunt....slow morning cant believe i saw so few black ducks today....didnt see one till 10 am! nice day before and after the fog rolled in and out. I took "sam" out for a sure thing scoter hunt earlier this year...for some reason, we had no reason to clean our guns afterwards!!! :hammer: :hammer: So i took him out to try and make up for it. He took his first Golden eye...

"sam" hails from NJ and now lives in CT.....a very traveled fella....lots of stories..loved listening to them

Very nice hunt Tool. I have been having difficulty finding birds and little time to get on the water the past couple of weeks.

hunted last Friday and saw at least 200 goldeneye as well as we got bombed by 2 dozen blacks over the course of 3 hours, as well as some mallards, hunted the same area wed and zero black ducks!! and just a few goldeneye....and these were weekday hunts... strange for sure.

and I cant really blame it on the old squaw hunters because they didn't shoot that much. when those guys get to hammering the seaducks hard, the golden eye get extremely skittish, and I am talking a mile away!!!!.

Okay, you can give me your usual crap about not hitting many, blah, blah, blah... but they were there in good numbers and decoying. Bluebird day too. And no, I was not the one shooting all the hen OS.

who cares about the OS....we want to preserve the goldeneye spots!! ha ha ha ha

I cant tell you how many times I have had golden eyes coming in and somewhere before they reach 50 yards , there is a volley of shots from over on the other side of the island and sure enough the birds coming in, flare and head off...it just frazzles them....

last year I found a nice pod of OS over near the thimbles.....maybe 150-200 birds at least.....

of course we were after scoter

The OS do not look like studs(can't see sprigs), the only GE I would mount would be a mature Barrows, the only wigeon I would mount would be a storm, and the hoody is a hoody. I'm sure that what you have on the wall means a lot to you. To me, I would eat most of those(and may use one for dog training). All of them are cool looking!!

I'd like a widgeon mount. Never shot one. I have a Common GE that I'm gonna mount as well, as its the only one I've shot. I shot dozens and dozens of buffleheads but I'm going to do a drake/hen mount with those too simply because I think they're good-looking birds. I'd mount one of every species if I could, I guess. One thing I can really appreciate is a mixed bag like that. To me, those are the hunts that stand out the most. Good job guys. Hope you have a good finish to your season.

Thanks, Tool. It was a good hunt and very different from Barnegat Bay where I've done a lot of gunning in the past couple of decades!

Tool's knowledge of the water and the birds is very impressive, but only half as impressive as his shooting! He's already taught me a lot about the local waters and proven a fine hunting friend. He exemplifies the spirit of forums where you should share your knowledge and your fun.

Great variety in that bag. We mount anything we don't have because there all cool in there own way and a new type of bird is what makes the hunt great .
