WELL?

Postby caleb » Sun Aug 26, 2007 4:29 pm

I got to run my "new" rig for a total of 10 hours. Aparantly the lower unit oil was never checked, I drained it(all water)and checked the bearings and seals. Lots of metal in the lower unit. So I took it apart today(thanks jim for the help)and now its confirmed...I need a complete lower unit! The inner bearing went and toasted the shaft and cut into the damn housing. Its so bad you cant get the shaft out. There was even a half of a snap ring that fell out while disassembling. That inner bearing is welded to the shaft with the race in pieces. So a quick note to anyone buying a used MM...Check the lower unit oil before you purchase.

Anyone got a price on a complete lower unit from PD?

Damn Caleb, Sorry to hear that.

Of Course Mudbuddy Hyper Drive's dont require Gear Oil, only grease.
And I have not worked on a PD yet. So as far as the parts cost I dont know.

The best part is I just spent a crap load of money because of an impending divorce(thats now not going to happen)and buying the new rig. Now I dont have any "play money" to to get a new motor. I guess im canceling my trip to shoot geese this coming weekend

Just my luck, hopefully ill figure something out by early teal.

Man thats a bad break. You can borrow my ghenoe with the 6 hp longtail if you want, its slow but it will run very shallow. I am sure some of us will give you a ride for early Teal if you are still haveing problems.

After looking at the top bearing(the one above the lower unit below the clutch)I need to replace that before I put a new lower on it(took two big pieces of metal out of it). Anyone ever done this? I know I have to remove the powerhead to do it but thats all I know. man does this ever suck!

well I just got off the phone with KP from prodrive. Great guy I actualy met him at the orlando shot show this year(didnt realize that before). He is sending me a complete unit(the new 8 bolt!)ups today. Very reasonable price. Very happy with the service I just recieved, it will go a long way when I decide on another motor in the future.

So do PD's use the same type of lube as an outboard lower unit? Never worked on one of these either.

Good to hear you got a resolution to the problem.

just so everyone knows. The previous owner contacted me and he is paying for the repairs. I didnt ask for it, a used motor is sold with no warranty and its my fault for not checking it, but I would do the same thing if were me selling it to someone else. I dont believe for a second he knew about the problems when he sold it to me. Hes a stand up guy and welcome in my boat anytime.

well, it took longer to rig the hoist than it did to pull the thing apart. Now im just waiting on the parts from PD. Thanks for all the help!

By the way my 2 ton come-a-long is bolted to a chain that is wraped around a 4X4 treated post that is now tied off to 4 trusses in my attic. My house would have to fall down for it to fail. :-D

feel free to ask any questions in the future if you get one to work on. It was pretty simple once I took a step back and looked at how it is assembled. It only took about 20 minutes to tear it down(with a big compressor and my air tools that I havent used since I was a volvo mechanic). I just cant wait to get it back together and throw it in the river for a test run for GA this weekend.
