Won't be till the spring... There was no water too fill it back up, so this spring they will run the canal a couple of weeks before they turn on the irrigation.... I'm pretty sure... Could be wrong thou,

That's why they make layouts.

The right layout setup works in any open water. You don't need sticks and brush. Fact is I am thinking about layout hunting Lowell. Had a lot of fun there in the 1990s! Are there a lot of ducks there yet?

I hunted it about 10 days ago in a layout saw a total of 10 ducks not counting divers, someone hunted the same spot a few day before and dug in there layout blinds. Im sure they could of put the smack down on the birds had there been any. Its a long walk to hunt where the birds are and to lay in a blind in waders with water 1 foot deep neo tub or not its going to SUCK !! If you ask me. but don't forget your shovel if you go

Guys I should have been more clear, I'm thinking about hunting it from a layout boat, not a layout blind on the mudflat! Like this. I'll probably wait until a little later and hope it fills up with rafts of ducks. If I tried the shore, I'd dig coffin blinds in to the mud for zero profile. A lot of work and muddy business though, and I'm not sure about digging up anything on a federal refuge........

Whiskerbiscuit, I bore witness to Abomb's quick (like 30 minutes) limit laying out on a bare mudflat. Three of us went. I made one trip through the 300 yard muddy walk and decided my ass was too old for that stuff. I hung up in the weeds close to where we parked the boat and watched Abomb and our other buddy knock a quick limit. We took dozens of decoys but the guys ended up with about 18 full body duck decoys and one spinner out...and the ducks were dropping right in. Throw a layout blind in the mud and dab a little over the doors, sit on the X (where most guys would not venture) and it can happen. Word.

HH did slog out after we shot our quick limits and we put plenty more birds right on top of us. HH would have shot his limit if not for gun issues.

Just curious. Those of you that have hunted lowell, has there been a lot of hunters like in usual years or has the low water kept most away?
