who's all goin out for thanksgiving?

Postby duckcomanderJR. » Wed Nov 27, 2013 7:53 am

do any of you have any annual traditions on going out duck/goose hunting on thanksgiving morning? my cousins and i go out every year. we've had geese pouring into our field the last couple of days so we're not gonna fight the crowds and hit the field in the morning.
if they fly they die!!

Yup. What could be better than a good morning shoot and then a feast and some football in the afternoon. Just gotta decide between the Snake and the Boise now.

Used to go every year, but have found the best bird to be had is on my own dinning room table.
Don't get me wrong tho. Thanksgiving day shoots always seemed to be good ones~! But that was back in the day when the wife prepared the entire Thanksgiving meal.
Now I brine our Turkey for two days prior to the big day, and then put the bird in the Traeger grill for three hrs of a very light smoking. Usually finish off in the oven inside the house for a period of time to be determined by the wife.

Hunted the Snake near Melba on Tuesday and it was very slow; 2 ducks early, nothing flying, no boats on the river getting them up. Today goose hunted near Star and shot 6 ducks and 4 geese. Seems that the Boise river drainage is the spot to be right now. Going to stay home tomorrow. Good luck to you guys.

Found a nice walk in spot that the ducks seemed interested in on Monday. Hopefully it didn't freeze over...

I'm not out on Thanksgiving as I will do all the cooking today, my Chinese wife did not grow up around turkeys as China (for the most part) do not do turkeys. Besides, this is a good time for me to score points so I can abandon her on Friday and Saturday for more hunting!
Do you know why Cajuns don't hunt elephants? Because the decoys won't fit in their pirogues!

Any luck for anyone?

Got 1 mallard on the Boise near Eagle this morning. Saw a total of maybe 15 ducks, I sure could use some weather for my spots!

Had a great Thanksgiving hunt! My spot wasn't iced over, got my limit before 9.. Really wanted an all drake mallard limit, but the hen wigeon got in the way.. Either way, I had a blast!
