Has anyone else heard the rumor of the regular season Goose limit getting raised to the daily limit of 3 per person?

Every time usfws gives us a liberal limit on a specie the next year we take a large hit on the limit. Last time we had a three goose limit the next year we only were allowed one the entire year. Same thing happened with pintails several years ago. Let's say drought continues until the breeding season next spring. Lots of birds will nest around grasses, logs and rocks. Spring rains start and eggs are a total loss. I take care of 75 goose nests every year and look for places that geese nest where predators or weather will destroy the nest, most eggs perish. Id bet mortality rate is over 80% on those nests. Nesting structures that are taken care of with nesting material are close to 90% hatch rate. This year on one lake I lost 2 eggs out of 24 nests.
I've seen the ups and downs in waterfowl harvests and numbers, I love hunting as much as anyone but if we dot take care of our resource we will be watching empty skies.

I don't know about were you're at but up here there are tons more birds that have stuck around here and I have seen a crap ton of birds hatched from this year. I hear ya about the drought and loss of birds but I would have to think that no matter what there will be some lost. Up here in some of the bigger citties these bird have become a nuisance. Now we didn't see as many migrators as the year before last, but I would have to think that was do to the lack of weather to push them down. Imo, a 3 bird limit won't alter the population that much. I haven't seen the harvest numbers, but I would have to think they were down last year from previous years. I could be wrong though. If there is a 3 bird limit that will make it nicer for when only 2 or 3 guys go out, 6 bird for 2 guys would make a trip a little more worth it for 2 guys. I doubt the limit will change though.

What is one more goose a day do for you? Is it worth it? no not at all, if you get so much more enjoyment out of killing one more goose, then go to canada, but if everybody starts utilizing the 3 goose limit then it can signifigantly hurt the population, i would rather have season after season after season of killing 2 geese a day, than have 1 or 2 seasons of killing 3 geese a day and then going to a 1 goose limit.

They make GREAT jerky!! To each their own man... Didn't think people were so sensitive about sky carp?? It's not like I'm talking about shooting 30 Mallards a day a person. Think about this though.. How many time do you go out to specifically hunt geese? How many of those trips does eevery person you're with shoot a limit? If you shoot a limit every time you go out then you're my hero and I wish I could hunt with ya. So is really that big an issue still, if so then my bad....

Don't take it personal Gearhead80. I don't think anyone was trying to take a jab at ya' :hi:
But I can understand how many around here would view it as a serious subject. I look at it this way, if our state/government/DNR can barely get things right to begin with, combined with the fact that when they tried this the last time one year later we were reduced to 1 goose per YEAR...1 extra goose per man per day is not worth that to me. Can you imagine what it would be like to legally only shoot 1 goose per year?

I didn't take it personal, some people just seem to think they have covered all the angles. I just wanted to point out some obvious things is all. It was only 1 goose per day when I strarted hunting in the mid to late 90's. It was just a rumor I heard because of the problems they have been causing in some cities up here. Went to an Applebee's this spring and had one nested by the front door and another standing guard on the entrance sidewalk chasing people away. I thought it was neat, most peole did not. Like I said it was just something I had heard. That's also why I said to each there own.. Happy hunting everyone, the season is coming quick!!

I have been hunting geese in northern Illinois for 25 years A 2 goose limit is a bit silly for Illinois but that limit is in place to cover bad breeding conditions, land development, climate change & weather etc you just never know whats going to happen climate wise so they feel its the safest number to protect the current population. Could they make it 3 per person at this time with out any fallout the next year? Im sure they could but for now its still 2. My business takes me all over so I get to hunt geese all over Canada,ND,SD,NE,IA you name it and the population of Canadian geese is just staggering my friends in Canada laugh at me when I tell them we are only allowed 2 here in Illinois they actually think I'm lying to them. 3 would be nice 2 is better than 1 and 1 would be better than none. Im pretty confident that with all the conservation thats been in place for such a long time they may up it a bit at some point but who knows. Happy hunting!
