Cougar!

Postby jpostx3 » Tue Oct 30, 2012 4:31 pm

Did you guys hear about the confirmed cougar sighting in Morgan County? No, not the two-legged cougar, the four-legged type. The picture was taken less then a mile from my old house as the crow flies. I still hunt the farm that is behind the house. Sort of makes it a bit nerve racking walking in that thick timber in the dark now. Here is the link: http://www.prairiestateoutdoors.com/ind ... confirmed/

No didn't hear about this one but we have a few sightings here in Hancock County. I've seen one myself two years ago when I was out deer hunting. It was pretty obvious what I saw since I got a good look at it.

I don't think the link worked the first time. I think I have it working now. Upon asking the DNR if they would be legal to shoot, they said that the state has no laws protecting the species. However, there are federal laws that protect the species. The species that federal laws protect are the Eastern Cougar. The Western Cougar is not protected. They look the same, so they have to do DNA testing to determine the difference. Stay safe out there!

Also, this was only the Fourth confirmed sighting since the 1870's. If you see one contact the DNR!

The Eastern Cougar was Declared Extinct in either late February or early March of 2011 by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
