Gadwalls

Postby luie b » Mon Nov 04, 2013 11:38 pm

Has everyone been seeing a lot more gadwalls this season? Last year I only saw several flocks then this year almost half the ducks I have seen were gadwalls. Is it everywhere or just me?

We have been shooting alot of woodies out at rice lake. I have seen 9 banded woodies so far between people I have talked to at rice and spring lakes. I have killed 4 gadwalls so far.

I guess it's just me then. At this rate I'm thinking about buying some gadwall decoys.

I'm a fan of a mixed spread. At least if you are killing, the spread is pretty bad ass to look at all day.

We've seen a lot of gadwall out at our river blind. In the past its almost always just divers until later in the year, glad to be killing somethin different for a change.

My buddy tells me that his blind on the local lake that we hunted today has done pretty good on gaddies . We sure didn't see any today or much of any other kind of duck for that matter .

It's really disheartening because I see a flock of "big ducks" and think, "Yes! we got some mallards now!" And then when they start working your spread and circling you endlessly you realize they're gadwall and aren't gonna come in. I did get a couple groups to light the decoys this year but they came in on the first pass instead of playing their typical gadwall game. I'm just waiting on mallards now, maybe will get a few early flocks with this front thursday.

The big numbers are in december but early flocks come in November. Last year I started killing mallards in the fields week before shotgun deer season.

The Illinois River Valley shouldn't be complaining about ducks is all I know. According to the surveys.

Mallards already started. They haven't made it to AB yet because they are scared and know they will get shot. :help:

A few are off to horrible seasons. I spoke with a ducker from there this afternoon. Drunk by noon and nothing else better to do.

I dunno guys i love killing big fat mallards but those acrobatic gadwall are a blast they do test your patience much like pintails but why argue about any of it? The thrill of setting those decoys in the early dawn spittin notes on the call just right to fool some birds into range All of it is amazing!!!
