Snow goose spreads

Postby luie b » Mon Mar 17, 2014 3:53 pm

How many decoys do most of you guys have in your spread? I went for the first time on Saturday with Warsaw bottoms hunt club and had a great hunt but I'm wondering how many it takes to kill some snows. We had 4500 in the spread that day and killed 37 and I'm wondering what would be the minimum number to get in the game.

If I hunt a feed I put out 6 to 10 dozen if I set up to hunt migration I set 15 dozen and up

Really? A lot of the guys I talked to that day acted like it wasn't even worth trying if you didn't have 2,000 or more. There were probably 1,000 full bodies there that day too.

Shot em just as good or better over 300 full bodies as i have 1500 white rocks/sillosocks just depends on the day and birds.

I agree the huge spreads are for show to the clients. Killed a lot if birds over small spreads.

I saw a good article in DU on hunting snows over water. The guys would put out 5 or 6 dozen snow/blue floaters and a small spread of land decoys. They claim the snows will work right in to the floaters and they get by with fewer decoys than when hunting dry fields.

Anything over 1000 is a show for clients. 500-700 seems to be about the magic number IMO, this also depends on where you are. Mound city you need at least 700 to get in the game, 1k is more like it. Personally I like socks over full bodies, just because moving that many full bodies can be a logistics nightmare.
