What am I doing wrong

Postby A_Winnie » Sat Oct 13, 2012 7:22 pm

The last couple days I have tested my luck at a little field hunting which i have never done. I can get the ducks to come in but they just seem to be out of reach for a shot and I was wondering what more I could do to help bring them in a little closer?

Adjust your decoy placement so if they want to land they HAVE to land right in front of you. Dont give them the option of landing elsewhere. This early in the season, if you are well hid there should be no reason for them to land away from your spread. Something doesnt look right (or sound right) to them.

Yes I don't know what though granted I am hunting in a bean field but my layout blind is smaller then any layout on the market and it is covered in all natural cover that i gathered from the field

Spinner no spinner?

If you are hunting a spinner.. The birds will commit suicide at daylight, but as light grows you will find that their passes are sometimes 30-40 yards out.. Move the spinner(s) 10-15 yards behind you to put them swings in gun range..

And turn them off after the 1st or 2nd swing if they dont just commit right in.

Likely they see your layouts profile...cut bean feild doe snot make for great concealment. One thing you may try is to dig your blind down into the gorund 8 to 10 inches...lot of work, but it does make a big diff in my experience. Other things to check are your spread lay out...you need to have a clear obvious landing zone for your birds. You cn look up a lot on how to place your decoys. If they continue to be shy...you can try placing your spiner BEHIND your bilnd. You could try cross shooting them out in front and off to the side of your spread...concealment is imporntat here too, but a bit less so. Scouting the filed to be certain you are WHERE they want to be is very important too. Last thing is dont call too much...aggressive callign when the ducks are interested is a bad deal...

If your not exactly on the x your going to need a spread that is visible to the birds. Run some honker dekes.

Yes your blind is covered but honestly it rlly stands out in a bare bean field. I would ask the farmer if your are allowed too dig down your blind a good number of inches so its not such big lump in the field. Ducks and geese have really become accustomed to layout blinds and i know its dang hard to get hidden in a bean field inles the farmer left alotta lumps of them laying around. Corn stubble is the best to hide your blind. Maybe try moving off to the side of your decoys in some high gras or something... or try looking for any depressions in the field or something to help break out your outline.

Your blind looks good but is a big bump in the field. Try finding a low spot in the field to help even things out. Try using Canada decoys too. Early season field hunting can be done with Canada decoys and a spinner.

Agree with the rest, but also it is pretty hard to see those decoys. Are you not running a spinner? You need to grab their attention somehow so they can see you from a distance. A spinner or a duck/goose flag will help. So will canada decoys off to the side. I'm not sure if you are allowed spinners or not, if not then at least pick up a duck flag if you can find one, if not a goose flag will work. You need to grab their attention from a long way off with some flashing and calling to get them to come your way, then finish them with the moving decoys and realistic spread.

I think you just need to move. Those birds already made up their minds that they dont want to come to your field. Time to start scouting and see where those birds are going.

What it sounds like is that they wanted to go there, then the first couple times it was hunted they knew something was up so they landed wide. Then they probably associated that field with danger and found a new field to go to. It is going to be nearly impossible to get those birds to come back, until you get some new birds mixed in.

Are they flying over the field at all? If so I'd just watch their flight pattern and set up on the fence row they cross over and pass shoot'm.
