How many decoy's should we use

Postby MR DUCKS » Thu Jan 04, 2007 4:23 pm

Me and pop are headed to SD for our semi annual duck hunt for 07-08 season. Normaly we hunt slough's and potholes. We scout and find out where the ducks want to be. this allows us to use minimal deeks, 6 to 12. This works great and we have had great sucsess. this year, however we are going to try the fields(layout blinds and best of all, no waders). What type of spread and how many decoy's should we use for all those big fat beautiful mallard's?

Well if you plan on hunting ducks in fields, the best bet is to use goose decoys and a mojo with a few fullbodies. I've killed mallards this year in corn fields with out any duck decoys and I killed mallards with 50 duck decoys. It just depends. Your best bet would probably buy silos for ducks. And then have a mojo and scout, scout and scout some more. Plus a few goose decoys. Have any other questions ask.

If you have any snow decoys that will help too. When we went to Nodak the mallards were feeding with the snows.

:withstupid: If your going to be in fields, use some canada goose decoys and just a few mallard dekes. The geese are easier for the ducks to see and they will decoy to feeding geese even if you dont use mallard dekes at all.
If ya don't like being peppered, don't set up near my spread..!!!!!

On the Canadian prairie fields I use 55 full body geese(canadas and specks and 30 full body mallards set downwind of the geese.I use 1 mojo with remote to turn it off when the geese show up.Works great for me! Brant

As mentioned, combo set ups are great. I have used Snows, Honkers, and Mallards and shot all three in the morning.

I believe in numbers, set everything you have out. A large flock is more visable and convincing.
