Input Needed on Missouri River Conservation Plan
The Missouri River has been converted from a free-flowing river to a series of massive reservoirs and a navigation channel along most of its length. However, portions of the river still support diverse populations of plants, fish, and wildlife. The Niobrara Confluence and Ponca Bluffs areas in South Dakota and Nebraska provide habitat for at least 60 native fish species and 26 sport fish species plus 115 types of migratory birds.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Park Service are working to keep these areas intact by creating two conservation areas - partnership-based projects that will work with willing private landowners, communities, and conservation entities (including the League) to build on existing conservation efforts. The projects will conserve critical fish and wildlife habitats, increase recreational opportunities, and preserve historical sites while maintaining sustainable ranching operations.
The agencies recently released a draft environmental impact statement and land protection plan for the two conservation areas. The plans will enhance conservation, recreation, and tourism - all of which will benefit local economies.
Now the agencies need your input. You can comment on the proposed conservation areas through June 14 by e-mail to niobrara_ponca@fws.gov

We have sample comments on the League Web site that you can send directly to the e-mail above. You can also find more information about the proposed plans on the Fish and Wildlife Service Web site or by contacting IWLA Regional Conservation Coordinator Paul Lepisto at
