What is the Bank Stabilization and Navigation Project?
Construction of the Bank Stabilization and Navigation Project (BSNP) provided for a channelized Missouri River from Sioux City, IA, to the confluence. The BSNP also altered the river flows and removed an estimated 522,000 acres of wildlife habitat that once comprised the natural Missouri River.

In 1986 (amended in 1999 and 2007), Congress authorized the BSNP Fish and Wildlife Mitigation Project to mitigate for approximately one third of the habitat lost (166,750 acres) on the river.
