Support Science as the Source
of Clean Water Protections
Dear Members and Supporters,

The Izaak Walton League was founded in 1922 by 54 fishermen concerned about water pollution and grew into one of America's strongest advocates for science-based management of water and other resources. Unfortunately, science has lost out to lawsuits and politics in water management over the last decade, leaving millions of acres of wetlands, most streams, and drinking water for over 117 million Americans at greater risk of being polluted, filled in, or otherwise degraded.

We now have a chance to restore science as the basis for keeping our waters clean and healthy. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a report ... n=AA103113 for public comment on the science linking upstream and downstream bodies of water. Uncertainty over this issue has been exploited to end protections for many upstream waters through lawsuits and other tactics.

This report is important because it will guide future decisions affecting all of our waters. The EPA has already begun to update the rules determining which waters of the United States are protected under the Clean Water Act and which are not. Those who would pollute our waters are already attacking this effort. Accurate science holds the key to getting this and other decisions right.

It will be important for anglers, hunters, and other knowledgeable outdoors men and women to support this effort to make science the starting point for keeping our waters clean. We also need to make sure the agency gets the science right. Please feel free to submit the comments under the link below or use them as a template for your own. Comments are due by November 6.
