Lake Odessa is a 3000 acre lake that's an old oxbow and is situated between the Iowa river mouth and the mississippi river. The lake is dammed and managed for waterfowl by the state of Iowa DNR. The north 1/3 is the Mark Twain National Wildlife refuge. During the waterfowl seasons the lake is divided into sections: A area (or the stake area bordering the refuge) is a lottery drawn 90 minutes before the shooting time to determine a person's selection status for the 56 (minus a couple that have been removed) predetermined stakes, B area is the area butting the A area to the south that includes alot of backwater sloughs etc... that people can walk in or drive a boat in to set up wherever they chose (typically have to register on opening day only and takeoff with the "great boat race" at midnight to get the best spot), and the mainlake area that borders the southwest side of the refuge that is first come first serve after midnight.
