I second the 10 minute retriever book, it is a great place to start.
For the more advanced work, I used the SmartWork series and have had great results using it. The only thing that really slowed us down was hip dysplasia :(
I haven't read any of the others, but I think most of them are pretty comparable as other folks were getting similar results using different sources. IMHO, the biggest thing is to do a little bit every day and gradually increase, backing up if you hit something that doesn't work as expected. If the dog messes up, it usually isn't because they are just jacking around, but because they don't understand what you want them to do.
