The Opener

Postby EcatMagoo » Sun Oct 09, 2011 7:28 pm

Saturday was a really enjoyable hunt. My father and I decided to stay away from the crowds and picked out a known wood duck hole. Our goal was to shoot a couple of woody drakes each and we thought it was a realistic goal. During my college years I didnt mind fighting the crowds but these days I'd rather shoot 1 duck and be alone than limit out tucked in the middle of a crowd. Duck hunting is suppose to be a peaceful solitary event and I have little patience for anything else.

The weather was calling for strong South winds and rain so we geared up with our rain coats and prepared to battle the elements. During the first hour we had a nice flock of woodies come right into our spread. We downed two birds and continued to wait. After the early activity passed it was slow going for the next hour. The rain was holding off and everything was going as planned. We started noticing some decent duck movement several hundred yards east so we made the decision to pull up our blocks and try another spot. After moving, a huge storm front started to roll in. As the front approached the ducks started flying everywhere. During the next hour we downed two more woodies, a pintail drake, and 7 teal.

We finished about 10 oclock with our two man limit. Days like these are a wonderful surprise. I never anticipated limiting out but when you go hunting you just never know what you are going to get.

Here are a couple of pictures of my father and the storm front.

What a great opener and you got to share it with your dad. Some of my fondest memories of my father, were the days we spent in the field together. Well done !
