How'd everyone do?

Postby soot87 » Sat Oct 29, 2011 5:54 pm

We saw over 200 of birds today, which was surprising. They weren't super interested in decoying but we had a few good flights work us. Between shooter medic and myself we put down three. I shot a gadwall and a pretty drake woody. Shootermedic shot a drake widgeon. Only a few down but cool birds. Hope everyone else did well.

We hunted Tuttle and completely struck out. Ended up driving around the lake for 5 hours and saw nothing flying

Hunted Perry, the water scarcity really showed as we hunted a 40 by 60 yard, 3inch deep puddle. Saw more ducks than I expected to, and had a couple groups of woodies and sprigs buzz us before LST. Only one group of mallards came in close enough, but dad went on a recon mission to find a larger source of water, and I was taking a leak.

We had plenty of birds to shoot at. Mostly wood ducks and a few teal. Saw some pintails and mallards but not near enough. I got 3 woodies and 2 teal.

The gravy was thin this morning. There were still lots of ducks flying but they weren't interested in coming into anyone's dekes. Could be that they have all had the crap scared out of them? Saw several nice flocks of pintails and mallards and lots of wood ducks.

It was a great start to season. The widgeon and gadwall just kept coming all morning both Sat and Sun. 4 guys shot 24 birds Sat and 5 guys (ok-4 guys plus my wife) shot 26 on Sunday. I dont remember the exact numbers of each but it was about 75% widgeon with several nice drakes on Sat. Didnt even have a chance to shoot anything but widgeon and gadwall, but it was a great 2 days.

Took time off from the ducks and went after geese. Only geese around were whitefronts and 5 guys got our 2 apiece.
This morning, while after ducks, I saw my first two flocks of Canadas come into the Bottoms. I dropped a 9.75 pounder.

I decided last Sunday morning to take a coworkers 16 year old son out for his first "real" duck hunt. He has jumped a few ponds before but never been on a real hunt. I was a little nervous as there were not a ton of ducks around yet and did not want to disappoint him. We walked into a spot very early and when it started getting a little more light out, I realized I was about 200 yards away from where I really wanted to be (bad navigation on my part)...but I was lazy and stayed put. Good thing we did...we shot our limits by around 9:00 or a little after. The kid shot great!!! I was impressed with his safety and shooting skills! He even picked out greenheads which really impressed me for his first real hunt! I was the one that shot a hen (shame on me). We ended up killing 9 mallards, two gadwalls and a beautiful Pintail Drake. I think I have have helped create a new waterfowler! In fact, I am giving him some of my old stuff that will get him by for a while until he can get some newer stuff! God I love this time of year!!!

Went out Saturday. Took a buddy who just got into duck hunting last year. Not to mention he just started shooting a shotgun like 2 years ago. Needless to say he's not the best shot. I got my 6 by 8:15. He got the other one. We should of limited out but since he's not the best shot we didnt. Not to mention the wind kicked up to 30-40 mph and the birds stopped flying around 9:30. Fun times though none the less and he got to see some birds he's never seen before.

The wind was brutal on Saturday. I experienced the same flight tendencies where i went.
