We hunted a farm pond as well. Birds were working very well at first light, but became shy shortly after and could not get anymore into our spread. The pond is a 1/2 acre, mud embankment all around. Thought the issue might be my partners had not mudded there layout blinds, so I threw on some plastic gloves and went to town on them. I was feeling pretty confident when 3 mallards came into view. They circled and hovered just out of reach and then flew on. This happend several more times.

My question: when hunting a muddy pond with little cover are you better off just sitting without the layouts and blending in as best as you can? Or should we continue with the layouts and blame it on the spread? We had a dozen dekes along with 3 floater geese and some shells out as well.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

We did come away with 3 mallards and a redhead, good to get out again!

Brandy stayed home on this one. My friend had a sweet little BL that took care of clean up.

Nice job! Seems most of the birds around here have booked out. Hope this cold front that's coming brings more down!
