Eggners Ferry Bridge collapse

Postby dablaw » Fri Jan 27, 2012 2:25 am

The bridge was struck this evening(Thurs) by a large container ship(Not a barge) and colapsed the mid deep water section tonight..No injuries..Guess the new 68/80 bridge project will have to get going quicker than expected..So to get by road over Ky. Lake you'll have to go to the Dam or Paris Landing...What a mess....
I'm an old fart , but young at heart...Been there, done that, wrote the freakin book...When i die I hope it's at sunrise, with a gun in my hand, and the sound of wings overhead...

The news reported last night that one of the pillars may have shifted, They are writing citations for people walking on the bridge now to see the damage and I guess they are suppose to send divers in sometime this week to check it out and see if all of the bridge is about to collapse now or not. My question is though his how did that ship make it through the locks? and if it was heading down towards Louisiana like I had been told and heard from numerous other people hunting in the Barlow bottoms this past weekend, why didn't it just take the Mississippi all the way down?

Bridge collision

On January 26, 2012, around 20:10 CST, Delta Mariner struck the Eggner Ferry Bridge, which crosses Kentucky Lake near Murray and Cadiz, Kentucky. According to Foss Maritime's spokesman, this was on the regular route taken by the vessel.[9] It is not known exactly what caused the incident, but U.S. Coast Guard officials state the vessel was operating in a recreational channel at the time of the collision, rather than the shipping channel which offers greater bridge clearance.[10] Foss representatives maintain that the bridge's channel navigation lights were not operational, though Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Mike Hancock stated this should not have been a significant factor in the incident and KYTC spokesman Keith Todd said he believes most of the lights were functioning at the time.[11][12] There were no injuries on the ship or bridge. While Delta Mariner was "not severely damaged" and the cargo of Atlas and Centaur stages was undamaged,[2][9] the collision destroyed a 300-foot (91 m) section of the bridge.[8][13]
