Will Ballard have any water or ducks come this winter?!?!

Postby Speck100 » Mon Oct 15, 2012 4:15 pm

Hello there fellow duck hunters I recently called the headquarters of the Ballard county refuge and they informed me as of right now they have no water to pump from and the river has to come up before they can pump at all! Does this mean all the clubs and other places down there can't pump water either??? And please give back good responses no hating on the corn clubbers cause they help everybody around here hold ducks to. So please anybody have any other info on the water situation or what could happen?

The clubs have wells. The State has wells also but the main pump draws from the river. It has to be 15-20 feet if i remember correctly and the river is about 8-10 right now.

Pray for 6-12 inches in November!

beaver dam is spring fed itll always have some wate in it, im not sure about mitchell lake though. as of right now ballard can not pump water due to the river being to low. theres is water on flat lake but not much, buck lake has a little but not enough to get in the back or in the scatters. black wolf swamp has little to no water theres no way to launch a boat in it but there pockets of water places in it, but they will be hard to hunt because walking to them you will sink in mud so it will be a chore to get to water, by the time duck season get here there maybe a lil more water but we need it to rain like hell till then to get the water we need to have a good season. just my 2cents

I gotcha I just didn't know if they were just totally screwed this year or if they will still have birds just harder to kill them.

Just got off phone with a friend that used to guide alot down there. He said most of the private places r scrambling. He thinks this will b a great yr to hunt if we get some rain or u can find a place holding water. Several clubs will go to the extreme of hauling in water via semis if they have to, but that sounded extreme. The water table for the wells is low too on his farm so it will b a slow pump. This is all second hand info from a friend.

Now i do know this first hand.
I have been on peabody in ohio county nd water all over is way down nd some very reliable holes have no water as of last weekend. We need about 12-18" of rain to make it worth a trip.

Well it's been a week or so I heard leases and other places in Ballard might start pumping some even said they are pumping? And that there's a few ducks around down there. Anybody heard any other news on pumping, water or ducks?

I heard there was more ducks on KY lake and lbl then ballard area. alot of ballard bottoms is very very dry. spots they have never seen dry before are dry.

lablover thinks the river will rise enough to fill ballards lakes etc. due to the hurricane, I personally hope it doesnt because horeshoe lake in illinois is full or water and has some ducks already

The Ohio is set to rise like 10 feet over the next week or so I've heard. Ballard should be fine.

would that make it where ballard refuge can start pumping water?

I dont think they pump much in the barlow area. i dont think 10ft will be high enough to back up into lakes, swamp, etc.

ohio is likely not going to push enough water to get the big river up more than 3-5 feet..

22.6ft should be enough to pump...plus that isn't even a crest prediction yet. Let's hope it makes it.

They go off of the Cairo gauge. They can pump at 19.5' but it sucks some air. They need it at 20.0' and they can run full force. The bottoms has some pumps in places that are fed by deep wells.

Just got back from Ballard dang there's a bunch of ducks down there and 95% of them are greenheads! CRAZY! But on a side note it looks like our hole won't have any water in it this year and Im wondering if any of y'all think we will still do good with a big dry field spread out. I think we can but I'd like to know what y'all think???
