Weekend in Kansas

Postby DeathCommander » Mon Dec 16, 2013 10:30 pm

Hunted southern Kansas this weekend which is usually a mallard heaven in December, but as luck has it we didnt see a single green top. Where the mallards lacked, the divers were hot and heavy, and I mean really heavy. We hunted a 40x40yd hole on the lake that was literally the only open water in the county besides the river, which was mostly locked up as well. It was nasty. Shot a 6 man limit of ducks, mostly ringnecks by around 9am. Mixed in a few unfortunate gadwall, hen widgeon, and the prize of the hunt, a nice bull can. Sunday we hunted the river with marginal success, scratched out 8 between 3 guys, but shot some nice ducks, (GWT & 2 drake hoodies). We also shot a hen goldeneye. All in all a great weekend ended up with 44 birds and more importantly some great memories.

I take it this was all free lancing. I seen some photos of guys shooting the snows blues specks and honkers pretty good in Kansas last week.

More or less freelancing. All hunting was done on public land. The first guy to the right of the tailgate (Brad), went to school there and now lives in Tulsa, nevertheless he still has connections to scout. That far south you dont see a whole lot of corn, but I suspect we would have done a lot better as for mallards if they did.

To your other point we saw numerous big wads of geese (snows & specks)... Someone was shooting the fire out of them.

Did you Kentucky fellows read the super fine print on those out of state licenses, It says from this date forward any Kentucky Basketball Fan must Learn the Rock Chalk Jayhawk Chant and any time no matter your location while watching a Kentucky basketball game must jump up and shout the chant at half time. Also if youre found to be not complying with this rule, if you come to Kansas again to hunt, you can only shoot hooded mergansers.

We call it the "duckie" instead of the dougie. It works. All the Hens love it

My buddy, albeit from Kentucky, was somehow transformed into a Jayhawk fan and he lovvvvveesss talking about how bad UK was last year and how we are overhyped this year. I always agree with him, but then promptly remind him of the 2012 title game. I will admit, Allen Field house is probably the toughest place to play in the country, maybe other than Cameron indoor.

Jayhawks usually have a good team and I have always been a fan. But they do seem to let a guy down in march every year. if they are matched with UK I'd rather see a UK win or a L'Ville win.
