Several great hotels in the quarter, in that price range, I'd recommend the Monteleonehttp://hotelmonteleone.com/
If you'd prefer to stay outside the quarter, check out the Prytanian Park in the garden districthttp://www.prytaniaparkhotel.com/ourhotel.html
The beignets and coffee at Cafe DuMond in the quarter are almost obligatory for breakfast one morning. There are a bunch of amazing restaurants, Commander's Palace is one of my favorites. Definitely find a poboy shop for lunch one day.
There's plenty to do. National D Day museum is cool, there's Aquarium of the Americas, an insectarium (walking among the butterflies is cool) and the Audoban Zoo. The night life in the quarter is.. interesting.
You may enjoy one of the airboat swamp tours within an hour of New Orleans, to see the ecosystem, or one of the plantation homes on river road near the city, if history interests you. There's also a civil war era fort on the river just south of the city.
There is also the Harrah's Casino.
that's just off the top of my head, any questions, ask.
