The USFWS said that duck populations in 2015 were 43% above the 1955-2014 long term average. This year was the highest count on record. If there were so many ducks, why was hunting so poor? I do not recall seeing any flight days this fall. I spend a lot of time outside my house and this year was very strange. I think I saw a couple of flocks of geese and one flock of ducks. I live about 2 miles from Catahoula Lake. Hunting was beyond terrible on Catahoula Lake because it flooded early covering and destroying the duck food. The vast majority of the few ducks killed this year on the lake were divers. The temperature was unusually warm in November, December and January. We actually ran our a/c on Christmas day with a temperature of 83 degrees. I wonder if El Nino was the factor behind such strange weather and poor hunting? Anybody have any other theories as to why the weather was so strange and hunting so poor?
Don't wonder clearly El Nino was a huge factor. Weather forecast was spot on. Warm and wet November and December cooler than normal January and February.
From north Louisiana to north Missouri there was millions of acres of water from rivers spilling into woods and lake that usually dont have water until spring. Ducks had more places to spread out instead of congregating in large numbers. We've had el nino before and killed ducks. High water was more of a factor than anything. They could get away from pressure pretty easily and had no reason to move

I think the same. overabundance of water up and down the flyway and adding warmer weather up north keeping it unfrozen would seem to be a reasonable answer. Assuming the duck numbers mentioned are fairly close to actual.
This years El Nino was the in the top 3 strongest on record. Decembers weather was the warmest on record. What do you think caused the flooding and warm weather?
