Ahhhh... The Opener! AND almost closer now

Postby tgs » Mon Oct 01, 2012 11:56 am

After having picked up my first ever black lab back in April, opening day has been hugely anticipated. This morning was no let down, birds where landing before shooting time and Pearl was steady to her sit command. After legal time arrived a hen mallard made the mistake of flying a little to close and ended up on the water...FINALLY...Pearl's first retreive, I line her up, cast her out and yup, she grabs the decoy , line her again...yup same result, finally she takes the cast and now won't grab the bird  All our training this summer, and for this... Well, she finally catches on to the game at hand and retrieves the hen  Not the first retreive I had imagine for her but she did it. That must have been the ticket though to put over the edge, the rest of the morning she did very well, especially for 7-1/2 months of age and she being my first attempt at training a lab. After we were done she had 9 retrieves to her credit, a great opener!

Here are a couple photos.

Outstanding!! Love seing people work young dogs...they learn so much by just being out there....that's what it's all about!

awesome!

gus is 18 months, entering season two

life conspired against us working as much as planned in the offseason, but he seems to be getting the big picture this year....he isn't guide-quality, but neither am i....and he's still a family dog 365 days a year

and he finished opening day with a sweet retrieve on a crip teal in the rice....diving duck, diving dog, eventual bird in hand

nothing better than working a dog....almost makes the rest of the hunt secondary

Great job Troy! As long as she was steady and sat until you sent her the rest will come. Sounds like she learned alot this morning. All the training has little to do with hunting until they go hunting. The light comes on and now you two have alot of learning to do together. Getting her in wild birds early will only help and I know you will have her on alot of birds. Her moma is due to have pups mid Oct. Doesn't look like she will have as big a litter but she is getting bigger everyday. Pups will be ready to go right before Christmas. I will definately keep one myself this time. The two I have in for training from Pearls litter are awesome as well. Going to be top notch duck dogs. Looking forward to seeing her.

Oh, but if your messages to me are honest, you ARE guide quality. Aren't you claiming to have put five ducks in hand this year on a total of 5 shells? :clapping:

Troy, sorry for the hijack. Great pics, and nicely done.

Well today we (Pearl) hit the milestone I was looking for her for this season. Ambitious maybe, but my goal was for her to get 100 retrieves before she turned one and today she retrieved 98-106... A proud papa

Here are a few from today.

Another great batch of pics Troy- congrats on a sweet day! :clapping:
Couple questions for you- In the next to the last image, is the banded duck to the right a W.W. Scoter? I'm thinking its a lot rarer to get a banded Scoter (any flavor of the three) than an Eider...cool stuff. Do you know where/when it was banded?

Yup. Banded White Wing, hen. It's the second banded WW in about 6-7 years that I've a part of. The other was a beautiful drake. No info yet, the eider was banded in quebec last year. Was a great morning.
