Duck Banding Coolness...

Postby R-Factor » Fri Aug 23, 2013 10:32 am

Recently I had the opportunity to check out an area where IF and W biologists trap and band ducks each year. One spot in particular had some fine specimens in the trap. When I scooted down into the area that morning, they had two mallards present. When I stopped by later in the afternoon, mallards had been removed (now married with bands I assume  ) and three new ducks were there- drake and hen Woodies and a BW Teal. I spoke with Kelsey later that afternoon and discovered that was their first BW Teal of the set...pretty cool.

Good question Mainehunter. I honestly wasnt there long to check it out. The mallards, in particular, went bananas when I went towards them and didnt want to disturb them too much. The pics were from my cell phone at probably 15 feet.

They put bait in the cage, and leave the top off. The ducks get used to coming in, eating, and then fly out the top. Then one day... surprise! The top is on!

Kelsey and Brad are first rate people -If you ever get the chance to help go ..It's a great cause You can learn and be certified to become a banding agent. Lots of work but very rewarding. They can't take everyone but all you can do is ask-if you apply-it's a follow through commitment.Like the wing study program, Finish.plus  the education you get is tremendous info.
Cool pics.
