First year in 12 years I have not had a young person to go with... It is a total blast taking a youngster out, and I wish I had done so.

Me too, no youth this year. I was out chasing geese around on the water (got 2), didn't see any other hunters out there. And, very few ducks...saw 4 teal and about a 15 mallards across a lot of territory around Rt 1.

LittleDucker got out and burned some powder but those sneaky Wood Ducks were just too fast. They would flutter into the little hole we were in and sneak out by the time she got the gun up. Lots of fun. She put a couple good shots on 'em. That IC choke is still pretty tight. I may look for a Skeet choke for her close range shots we take.

Only distraction was the guys that came in and set up literally 75 yards away. Their older boy shot a Wood Duck that crippled and they lost it. At least he looked for it, but the paddling around in circles got old after while. They picked up and left a half hour after opening time.

Our warden friends came and chatted with us. I think they get bored with us... not getting to write tickets.

Nice little hunt.

My boy struggled with the woodies as well.
Shot one of my decoys instead of the duck......
Didn't see the teal until it took off,
water swatted a hen woody and it flew off unharmed
Fog was so thick the geese couldn't be seen until they were right on top of us.

But that smile was worth it. Its going to be a fun season. If the dog doesn't bite, he was the only one frustrated.

Some years ago-maybe 4 or 5, I had a friend bring his 14 year old son out for a youth day. I took them to a small pass shooting spot and he just put a whooping on the empty air all around those woodies. I think he ripped off over 50 rounds, and never cut a feather. Today, he is stone cold killer of ducks- possibly better than ANY of the people I hunt with in terms of shot/hit percentages. He still- every single time we hunt together, Thanks me for taking him on that first day. I always tell him I had more fun than he did- and I am telling the truth to him.
