Was paddling around Coobscook Bay (Washington Cty) this morning at around 5:00 AM I noted absolutely NO ducks but did see a raft of about 25 commorants and an eagle.
Work has me in Castine all week and I spent part of today scanning the water with binoculars but was unsuccessful in seeing any "large" numbers of ducks.
Yeah, that is what I figured. I saw the same thing last year off Schoodic point. Eiders didn't seem to want to come into the bays and closer to shore until around the last part of September.
Hunted in and around Blue Hill Bay and Naskeag last year but never did see the huge population of Ediers that I saw the year before. I hope that this year brings better numbers.
RD are you seeing any GOLDENEYES and OLDSQUAW or just Eiders?
I went out about 2 weeks ago on a little scouting trip. I ran into 2 really nice flocks of resident Eiders ...first flock was about 300 birds and the secon flock was up near 500 to 600 birds....I'll be going out acgain tomorrow hope to see more.
I went out Saturday on a little shake down cruise/scouting trip..While out I ran into 4 large rafts of eiders must have been around 1100 or 1200 of them in all the rafts,,,
The Atlantic ocean is a pretty BIG place. . . your location says "belfast" so can I assume that is where you are seeing all of the eiders? I am just curious as to where they are hanging out. . . any specifics would be great.
