I'll be coming as part of a group in November to hunt Eiders. We'll be flying into Portland and was checking for places that carry and avalability of 10 ga. ammunition.
In Portland you may be able to find some at Dick's Sporting Goods.....it is near the airport.........otherwise, Kittery trading Post is about 45 minutes south on the interstate and their selection is not significant either. Not sure of other sporting goods dealers such as Howells's up in Gray. I do know that you can't get 10g at Walmart here.
You do not need a 10g for seaducks!!!!!! I use 12g 2 3/4" shells in #2 and do fine. You may wish to reconsider the 10g.
DUKHTR pretty much summed it up.If you plan on going ahead with the 10 gauge you may want to consider sending some ahead of you so it'll be there when you arrive.
I used to hunt a BPS 10 guage alot, still do once in a while but not near enough as I do with the 12 gauge now that the steel loads are so much better than they used to be.
The best place I knew of to get 10 gauge ammo was Kittery trading post, they always had some but not a wide selection.Usually they carried #2's and BB shot, however they are almost an hour south of Portland as previously mentioned.
Are you hunting with a guide and if so can they obtain the ammo for you?
If you have any contact people in Maine that you will hunt with maybe they can find what you want.
Other wise you can do very well with a 12 gauge.
Good luck.
Thanks for the info. I've been debating with myself whether or not to take the 10. The other gun of choice would be an 870 express. I'd rather shoot it being more comfortable with it on ducks. I use the 10 when hnting geese around here. I'll take your word and bring the 12.
I have a 10 g and only use it on geese the 12 g is a much nicer gun for sea duckin especially when you fire 30-40 rounds through it some early morning sea ducking. Also, you will be shooting from a boat and I find the 12 much lighter and easier to control.
Dress warm and make sure to bring heavily insulated wader or in the least water proof pants and super warm boots.
Hell the weather will be mild when you get here on the 11th swim trunks and a t shirt should be fine. . . ignore my previous post. It doesn't get cold out here sea duckin until mid January. . .
Have a great time at Casco Bbay you should be in for some great gunnin'
