That's a sad thing to hear. I was stranded in Fort McMurray around Feb 2003 and got a tour of Syncrude. That entire town smells of crude oil . The oil is near the surface and they had conveyer belts that moved the sand into the facility. Back then the company had in the works to sell oil cheaper to the U.S. but I never saw anything about it back here. I don't remember any ponds then again everything was snow covered.
