PREDICTIONS FOR OPENING DAY!

Postby captainkevan » Fri Sep 29, 2006 3:50 am

Okay, I know all of you guys have been scouting lakes and ponds on a daily basis looking for big numbers of ducks to show up. Don't deny it, we're like a bunch of hunting "junkies" driving down the road looking at every bit of water that visible from the road and swerving all over the road. (I do anyway) My wife hates driving with me during hunting season. Anyway, let's get some predictions for opening day. Have you found big numbers? or is it still too warm for those "honey holes" to be filled with fowl??????

Personally, I haven't found big numbers of mallards ... So I am planning on spending opening day at a spot that gets sea ducks as well as puddlers.

This week I did see a large flock of black ducks at one of the larger marshes I hunt - probably close to thirty birds - that was encouraging. I haven't been out scouting for sea ducks yet. I suspect a good cold- snap up North will send 'em barreling down here before opening day. Won't be long now!! Alec

Tim I agree with you there. Actually I hope every year is better than
the last! Looks like I have to work opening day, but I will be out
there day two. As far as birds go, I havent seen much. I havent seen
any migrant blacks just the same few that stuck around looking for hand
outs around the docks. And that is the same for Mallards. As far as sea
ducks I have seen a few flocks of white winged scoters and that is it.

This year I am going to try to take it easy on the blacks. Word is, is that
the numbers are a little low. But you know how that goes. One person
says the numbers are up, another says low, and another says stable.?
Who knows. I would like to jump shoot some of these Hybrids that I see
that are half black and half mallard. I am sure the cross breeds arent
good when it comes to trying to keep the strain of bird straight. So time will tell.
Can't wait though.
