What were everyone's firsts this year?

Postby woodduck14 » Wed Dec 25, 2013 8:39 pm

I shot my first banded duck.
Got my first drake ringneck.
Got my cousin his first ever duck. A nice greenhead.
First season I haven't put a new hole in the waders.

Anybody have anything good?

1. My pup's first retrieve
2. My first band (black duck I shot yesterday)

Did not get out a ton this year but a very rewarding year none the less.

Yesterday was the first time I tripped and filled my waders to my waist. Funny now but not at the time. Especially in 2 degree weather

I went to Markover Preserve in CT for a Pheasant hunt a few weeks ago. A lot of fun for a group of guys. I plan on taking my Lab there later this winter for his first hunt.

Nice pics Mike!

Two firsts stand out for me this year.

1) Running my dog in the youth upland hunt. Seeing kids get there first birds is something I will never ever forget!

2) Taking my friends son out on his first upland hunt during the regular season and seeing his face after he got a couple of quail.

Overall it was a great year for me and I feel pretty damn lucky. Best year in a long ass time

a lot of great firsts for everybody this season! only first i can think of is getting two toms this past spring.

i think it is great to hear about people taking new hunters out, especially young hunters. those are some great photos mike j. you have done a lot to help introduce young people to hunting. you set a great example for them.

I was able to tag my first Bobcat this year. About 20-25lbs and 34 inches long. A very nice cat I will post pictures when it gets back from the taxidermist.

My first this year was running into complete jack-a**'s at every single spot I have to duck hunt. It happened almost every outing, to the point where I was done duck hunting before mid November. I don't think I even shot a mallard this year. I sat in my deer stand for the majority of the season. I haven't run into such disrespectful and unethical hunters in my 10+ years of duck hunting.
My mission for next year is to find all new spots, it's sad.

On the positive, Zoe had some good retrieves for her first year. It would have been nice to hunt her for the whole season.

I'm counting this as a first. For many years I've hunted waterfowl with the same hunting buddy. I'm sure I'm not alone in this regard. How refreshing it was to finally hunt with some new friends this season. (no offense Capt Dave). I had the opportunity to hunt with Matt McManus and Professor Leakey. We had great hunts, and Leakeys hunt was the most birds taken on my hunts this season. I hope I can take a few more dhc'ers next year. Sounds like KJM could use an enjoyable hunt. And I have yet to get out with Mike J.

My other notable first for me relates to my "Hunter Numbers" thread. Well, well, well. When the spot you hunt most often ends up having the only open water besides the coast, you find hunter numbers. Last Saturday I pulled in being the eighth vehicle and the ninth was pulling in behind me. Easy decision, home for more coffee.

I also participated in this years youth waterfowl hunt, thanks to Mike J for his trust in me.

Kev... That sucks. If you want to get Zoe out, let me know. I've got a few spots that get very little pressure. You, Daisy and Zoe are more than welcome any time. We might not get tons of birds, but we can definitely decoy a few and put Zoe on some birds.

This year was my first time to hunt in MA and it came with a lot of firsts. First scoter, eider, blackduck, bufflehead, and old squaw. Myself and another good ole boy from the MS delta came up before Thanksgiving and hunted with Captain Adam Smith. We stayed in Peabody and ate lunch everyday at Kelly's roast beef joint and ate a hell of a good meal at Turner's in some nearby town. I just want to say everyone we met in MA was extremely nice and we plan on coming back as soon as possible to get some more old squaws and hopefully some Brant and mountable scoters. MA far exceeded my expectations. Oh managed my second band on one of the eiders.

This season I bagged my first banded drake eider, first drake lesser scaup, and also bought my first house!

I hope to get out some more this season but if not, it was a good season for me. Even though I only got out 4 days.
A serious reduction in the population of black ducks would mean the end of waterfowl hunting for the majority of the New England sportsmen.

My first bird of the season was a pintail hen and my first bucket list bird was a barrows :)

Lots of firsts for me this season.
First freelance hunting trip to Canada
First Ross goose
First Speck
First Spoonie
First drake Pintail
First time I ever limited on ducks including a Canadian limit of pintails (4)
First Drake Eider
First banded duck (hen eider)
First Brant
First Canada goose kill in a field with a foot of snow
I have to say that the waterfowling here in NH and VT was the worst I have ever seen. I hunted Mass 4 days and killed more ducks and geese there than I did all season locally. So MA and SK saved my season. Lol
