I really enjoy widgeon because they are a hard target, decoy well (typically better than teal), and are a cool looking bird.

Widgeon are beautiful birds, sad that their numbers are dropping so steadily. Same is happening with my favorite, pintail. Even though I would like to get a pin every day , believe me I would not be upset to drop a limit of mallards and teal..

Although, like most hunters I go out in search of mallards. Most of the time, I end up shooting half my limit in wood ducks. This year, I would like to get a nice pintail for the wall.

I would LOVE a wigeon. I'd really like a nice redhead for the wall too. But I'll take whatever flies by.

sad your vote did not include black duck , which is my favortie, but definetly not a target bird due to low numbers and low bag limit. I have one mounted that is just awesome: cool speculum, cool hidden colors and the overall size. We are going on a guided hunt this fall and I am dying to shot my first can. Cool thing about your poll is that on the right day in Saginaw Bay you probably could shoot all of them with a group of guys. Where, I live we get our four Mallards a piece and then really struggle to find two birds to round out the limit unless we want to shot Merg's.

That is why I love going up there, you see the whole spectrum of birds. I actually shot a black duck up there the last time I went hunting on the bay some years ago, beautiful birds. I would like to get one for the wall one of these days

You do realize Merg's don't round out your limit don't you? They are completely seperate bag, you can shoot 5 mergs (2 hooded) on top of your daily bag limit for ducks.

We always get a lot of Blacks, Pintails and Mallards. What I really want is a nice full color Canvasback.

yep, fully aware about mergs not being part of the daily bag limit but I don't take em because they are not the most tasty. Will take one if it is slow and I am looking to make jerky. I just like the black duck. We have a real small spot we call the "black duck hole". We se 10-15 there each and every time we go along with other birds too. I shot a monster drake black duck there two years ago that adorns the basement wall and is on the taxidermist site. I just love how they look. Cannot wait to hunt our spot in about three weeks.

Anyone do any diver hunting ? Really interested in layout hunting but have never had the chance to go. That would be the way to get a diverse bag. I'm out in Erie,PA for the year, I hear that they sometimes get sea ducks, scodders, out on the big lake. Sounds like a blast. Anyone ever hear of that happening on any of the lake that surround MI ?

yes, my buddy does layout hunting on both sides of the state. He loves it and does quite well, especially late in the season. He talks about scoter and oldsquaw hunting off the east side of the state, but you really need the gear to hunt deep water to get them. He mentioned they hunt in 100' plus water? He has special gear to do this but they have a blast.

Heresy...nobody shoots sea ducks on the great lakes from a layout....complete and utter fabrication/fairytale.

I really miss those buffie shoots we would go on the last two weeks of season around the Soo while I was attending Lake State. Yeah, they are just buffies, but I have great memories of great shoots with great friends during the coldest, nastiest days of the season...

I'd trade one of those hunts for 10 of my hunts down here. I really hate mosquitoes but especially during January!!
