I may take a trip back home to go duck hunting with my dad up at Fish Pointe, any water? Worth even making the trip from North Carolina? Seems like every year we go out there is less and less water. We would always go out to the end of Gothom road, when we got a bad draw, until two years ago when we made the final 200 yd. hike through the knee deep mud ***? Don't really know of any other spots beside the draw. Almost like its a lost cause. Any help or ideas? Thanks, Jim
Yeah, it did rain for almost a week straight, but prior to that everything was dryer than a popcorn fart! I think that what rain we had was quickly sucked up by any vegetation in the area; my garden was bone dry the other day.
I suppose you could call up there and see if the rain helped any, but my guess is that it did nothing but make a few mud puddles.
I am told that Shiawassee is about the only managed area that has good water conditions. I was at Fish Point on Sat and there was not much happening and very low water. I could put in a boat on Gotham road 10 years back but now you can not even see the water from there.
My old man talked to a guy this week that went up for the youth hunt and he said they "slaughtered them" He actually went up there today(the 23rd) and said they haven't taken the corn off yet?? He also noted that the water in the canals seemed to be at about the same height as last year, so whats the deal? I would almost bet the hunting wouldnt be that bad, the birds have been going there for years and years anyways right.
It might be ok but ducks like water to land in and I would think that a lot of them are going to hang out in the refuge or out in the bay. but I have hunted the youth opener with my sons there for years and we always get a lot of birds before they start pumping but they wise up real quick. We are going to try it and if it is not looking good I will hunt the bay this year.
There is always the black plastic pond idea..... I have never hunted the bay before, I'm not trying to steal spots or anything (seeings how I live down here.) But what are some options for the bay? Where to put in at, and would I need to bring a boat with a pop up blind, or are there catails to tuck into. Like i said I've never been on the big water so I don't have a clue.
Very shallow on the bay so a mud motor is a plus if you want to get into the reeds. other than that you just motor out, set out some deeks and pop up the blind. grab a map of saginaw bay from ganders or bass pro and it shows all the boat launches and INCORRECT water levels.
I talked to the guy named Tim at fish point today and he spoke of gloom and doom about water levels. He said " If you do come up make sure you have a plan B"
Thats what i figured. Oh well, I'll just have to give it a shot anyways. I wonder if all this talk about the water and such will make for a lighter crowd out there.
