Decoys on Ice!

Postby recker » Sat Nov 13, 2004 8:58 pm

Has anyone ever tried a field type spread on the ice for mallards on a frozen slough?Always wondered if this would work in an area with lots of mallards but no open water.

Just break open a small hole and then set the field mallard dekes or goose decoys around the edge like a field spread. Has worked many times for us!

Why bother breaking thick enough ice to walk on? A paiul of warm water with a bit of blue vegitable dye and spread in on the ice-it looks like open water, Also black poly looks like open water too (from what I heard).

I late season I use combo of field and water decoys when there are 1/2 to 1" thick ice and not too strong of winds.
