Sold my goose decoys

Postby Ducks22 » Fri Jan 18, 2013 11:40 am

I got a wild hair this week and decided to put my goose decoys on Craigslist to try and upgrade the spread a little and I am out of room in the trailer to just go out and buy more. To my surprise 10 doz were gone in 3 days. After doing this I was curious if anyone else sells and upgrades decoys on a regular basis?

My brother and uncle have been doing that for a while to keep getting better quality decoys. I personally haven't, but that's because I am just building up my spread and don't have enough to sell any off, plus I only have been buying good ones so no real need yet.

I have a buddy that has done it often. I find that while I keep adding to the numbers, 90% of my hunts don't require more than a couple dozen decoys. Has me thinking it might be time to start taking a different approach. I swear once you have accumulated a bunch of crap it almost adds stress trying to remember it all. I used to head out with a handful of shells, waders, coat, a call or two, and a dozen dekes. Shot a lot of birds then too.

seems like it used to be easier to shoot a bunch of birds with low end stuff than it is now... or maybe Im just brainwashed by the high end stuff... either way, my goal for fields is to have 3-4 dzn ffd and maybe a dzn good shells to mix in. wont always use them all but I think that's enough for when a big spread is needed at least for the size of my hunting group.

Don't underestimate silos....use em every year. They pack easy, and are way cheaper than a lot of full bodies.

never used silos but im a big fan of shells for the reason they pack easy. if you dont have a trailer, full bodies fill up a trcuk bed real fast.

The only big knock I have on silos is you need to bring a drill late season to make holes when the ground is frozen.

You seriously drill? I figured a bar of rebar and a hammer could make a hole for the stakes, but I've never field hunted before

1 person with a cordless drill and 1 behind him with the dekes....only takes 1-2 secs per...way faster than a hammer

You use a mason bit or anything? What happens when you hit a rock?

I've used mason bits...work well. Never had an issue with rocks, but also never tried to do anything with the bit after.

Just curious because I don't know, do the shells have stakes, or maybe you don't have but do they make stakes for those?
