They're back

Postby beretta24 » Sun Apr 21, 2013 1:48 pm

I saw just about everything native to MN in about 30 minutes this am, except for BWT, ruddies and Cans. Only a little open water around the edge of the lake but they are pushing to get north. This was in the north metro. Man I wish you could get a tag for just 2 or 3 birds in the spring for the wall.

Drove from Brainerd to Fargo yesterday evening and saw thousands of geese V'd up and headed north. Really cool to see. Even saw a ton of snows and blues. If I would have know there were gonna be snow geese on the MN side I might have went up there early and tried to get on a sneak or two. If spring snow is even open still

I was around Hoffman last week and I saw tons of Snows and Blues. Lots of mallards and a few Gadwall.

The ponds around my place in Shakopee have been loaded with waterfowl for the past 2 or 3 weeks. Yesterdays count on the pond right outside my door:

53 mergansers
2 Canada geese
1 Greebe
1 mallard

Although on a pond across the highway it is loaded with ringers and blue bills. I've got to get pictures of them one of these days. Probably 100 ducks on that pond between the ringers, bills, merges, buffies, and geese and it's not even 5 acres.

it was mixed with some farm duck, it had a huge white ring around its neck and the breast was reddish orange, other than that it looked like a normal greenhead. i have a picture from after i shot it ill try to get up here if i can figure it out.

the thing i was most suprised about down there was how cool a full plumage drake gadwall looks, i know that sounds dumb but i had never seen one before.

Geese next to the house, first black ducks I've seen in MN, bunch of mallards chillin with the cows, and a whole mess of cans.

Couldn't get a picture of them all, but there were probably close to a hundred canvasbacks on that pond. Was also pretty cool seeing black ducks in the wild
