I have a small Swiss army knife in my pocket, but I quickly laughed that off. I also thought about just tackling the buck, but thought better of that as I had no way to do anything with it once I did.

There was no blood to follow, and my flashlight died when I was first looking for it while it was closer to the road. I put a knife in the center console when I got home, but I doubt this will happen any time again very soon. First deer I've tagged ever, and it isn't from not driving in deer country

Ya its sad to see them crawl off wounded but the real sad part is if you would have dispatched it with a side arm or something and a sheriff or warden showed up you would have probably been charged with something!!

Pretty low light, but he had a solid main beam that I could see. That's about it.

I called the police pretty much right away and they asked if it was dead or if I had/could dispatch it.

I ended up pushing him farther into the woods without being able to see because my flashlight was dying if that's what you mean.

I was hinting that you still had two good headlights on four wheels. In reality somtimes there's not much you can besides try to track him down. If he was still moving decent you might have just dead legged him for a bit.

Thanksgiving pic...
Bit of a hen beat down but it was thanksgiving so I was thankful for what i got!!
Funny story on them me and my buddy went to look for a green head that sailed a bit (found him stone dead) we look back and a flock set in the dekes we are one mallard away so we did the army crawl up the hill (has never ever worked for me) they get up and fly away (later go pro footage showed it was 13 ducks out of a 40ish flock that sat in our dekes for exactly 40 sec best part of the whole video was the 2 idiots walking back up after they jumped) we figure it was good wasn't even 10 yet get situated then a truck with a trailer hits the field behind us I was hopping they would setup quick...wrong they spent the next 2 hours whacking Christmas trees down with a chainsaw FML one shy!!

Got to tear into one flock this morning no special stories ducks came in ducks died

Hopefully I can finish with a bang tomorrow but this east wind that is suppose to come in may screw me worst wind possible for our setup!!

North.

I use High mountain jerky seasoning. Cabelas sells it. I use the wild goose one. There is cure and seasoning. For 8 mallards (16 halves) I use 3 tablespoons if cure and 3 tablespoons of the seasoning. I also add ont tablespoon of a cajun spice. I then lay the meat in a cookie sheet and sprinkle the mixture evenly over the meat. I'll let it sit an hour or so then flip the meat and repeat. I then flip the meat once a day for two days. I only do the breast meat off the bone. I usually save the least shot-up birds for this.

Now to the smoker. I use a standard Weber charcoal kettle grill. I start with around 15 coals on one side. put the meat on the other side. Add a wet wood chunk to the coals and cover. I check when the smoke stops, add a couple coals and another chunk of wood. Depending on wind, outside temperature this goes on for 3-4 hours. If I average it out I add wood/charcoal every beer or so.

Eventually I'd like to get a real smoker capable of doing more quantity, and less labor.

So I set out to chase some cock yesterday. I have permission to hunt 1/4 section of WRP land way out west that really is a phenomenal pheasant hunting spot and I thought I would hit it up. I'm about 4 steps into the field and some muzzleloader hunters roll up. I walk over and talk to them and they say they are gonna just gonna push it real quick for deer so I let them push first cause thats the nice thing to do seeing as how these guys were probably locals I'm a citiot, thinking 3 guys and with dog can't have that big of effect on the pheasants, especially considering the amount of pheasants that are out there it wouldn't matter.

Well I hit up another spot and came back while the muzzleloader hunters were gone and we SCOUR this spot and I'm not even getting up a single hen, when 2 weeks ago we shot 4 birds off it and flushed at least 40 birds. Finally, our our way back to the car in about the last 10 yards of grass we haven't pushed yet, a cock flushes as we got him, thank God.

One more funny story, so there we saw a cock hiding in a 4 foot wide strip of cattails between the road and a pond. So we drive past, load up and then get out and try to walk it up. Its pretty much the perfect spot to get one off the road because it would likely flush over the frozen pond behind it making it easy to find. Weeeelllll it gets up right it front of us, and whaddya know, me and my buddy both miss.

Then I see a truck rolling up behind my car. The only thing worse than having a brutal miss is doing it infront of an audience. then I see the guy in the truck is younger and he has a big beard and along hair and no BS.... I swore it was hillbilly, and now I'm thinking "great now everyone on DHC is gonna know about this horrible miss, and there's gonna be 10 pictures of it to prove it!" buuuut the guy stopped and made fun of me and it wasn't hillbilly.

You're right, starting a sentence with "so" makes for horrible sentence structure. "After a long day of chasing cock, I was only able to bring one to hand," would have been far better grammar.
