Personal Goals

Postby dfrauenkron » Wed Mar 05, 2014 3:22 pm

Who sets personal goals each season? I do and was just curious what some of your goals are. Maybe I'm weird lol....wait, I think we all are if we visit this place regularly. 2 years ago my goal was to shoot 4 green heads on a hunt, which I accomplished my last hunt of the year. Last year was to shoot a goose. I had shot a few in the past, but had been in a slump for a couple years. We don't get many chances at geese in the main area I hunt. First one I got for the year was even a cackler. Shot quite a few geese last year as I targeted them a lot more. I like the challenge of something new. This year my goal is to shoot a pintail. I've never shot a pintail and hopefully can accomplish it this year. Obviously we don't have many in my area so I plan on traveling to hopefully find one. Who knows where it will take me. And if not next year the chase will continue.

Shoot better in 2014. I'm proficient at missing the broad side of a barn in the duck blind.

Shoot a canvasback.

More general just find more or better spots, do "better" than the year before.

Oh yes - buy a decent boat....and then learn how to back in to places :help:

I never really set specific goals. One thing I have been working at though is getting birds to finish better. I want landing gear down right in my face as often as possible.

I set goals that I've had to redefine.

I had two goals when I stated waterfowl hunting a couple years back. Get a male wood duck and a pintail. I just like those two species, and those were my exact words for my goal. Well... I've had to redefine them because I've gotten a few male wood ducks, but all have been yearlings and not really what I had in mind. Last year I finally tagged a pintail... hen. Really want a sprig, which I know won't be overly impressive vs what they get down south, but I don't mind that. So now my goals are get a Mature, drake wood duck and a mature, drake pintail.

Mine is to hunt more days then then the last hunt more water cover more ground meet more people. get in on a field hunt that will leave a lasting memory. Kenneth wants me to get him on geese. and he even brought it up today. So that's Number 1. would like to reload for the 10g and the 410. besides all of that I may have more goals set that I wasn't expecting goldfish knows about them. But I wont be able to share them for a couple days to be sure. So Gordon keep lips sealed

Have even more fun than last year.

Actually hit more ducks this year.

Get my pup dialed in and trained well so we can enjoy hunting together.

Good stuff guys. The shoot better thing I can certainly relate to as well. I still remember from last year a big green head I whiffed on right at LST. Was no farther then 5 ft from the end of my barrel when I pulled the trigger. Sat for another 3 hours never had a duck remotely close. Wouldn't have been pretty if I did hit him but it's still eating at me 4 months later. More of a choke issue but I still missed.

It happens. Now if it happens all the time you should probably hit the clays course.

There are shots that are gimmes that you miss and then there are goofy directly over your head shots or that 3rd shot hail mary that connect.

The Pintail has been on my list forever. I had two fat bright white drakes circle and circle last fall, ended up landing short of the decoys and my buddy ended up shooting the hen that was with them. Classic Dan O'Neill luck.

I've never set any particular goal for a season (now I kind of want to), but I have been keeping track of which species I've taken and am getting down to the end of my list which is cool. I knocked off black duck and pintail over the last year and am pretty much down to getting a speck and then pursuing sea ducks at some point.

Anyone shoot a speck in MN?

A few specks get popped every year but the brunt of the migration is further west. I've seen em but never pulled the trigger on one.

I've shot several pintails, none good enough to mount. Several years ago right at freeze up 2nd shot and I had a nice drake with a long tail come thru the decoys. It was supprising since we usually don't see pintails late in the year. I stand up, and 3 clean misses. 2nd shot was trying not to laugh, I made some comment about just saving myself 400 bucks, that got him laughing.

I am chasing that nice mature drake pintail as well. I have shot a few in the last few years. This year is to get a snow goose and if things go right maybe get a Kansas hunt in during the fall.
