Minnesota's first Becoming an Outdoors Family Day will be Sunday, Aug.14, from 12:30 to 5 p.m., at Wargo Nature Center in Lino Lakes.

"This is an opportunity to have your family enjoy a fun afternoon of experiencing outdoor skills such as air gun, archery, fishing, canoeing, nature hiking, fish and wildlife identification, orienteering and more," said Linda Bylander, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Becoming An Outdoors Woman coordinator.

The event is part of the DNR's Step Outside Week, which encourages individuals and families to try outdoor sports. In addition to the hands-on activities, there will be hunting dog demonstrations from Kathy Simane, co-host of the American Outdoorsman TV show, Linda Fredericksen will give sled dog demonstrations and the Wildlife Science Center staff will conduct educational programs with live animals.

Registration is limited to provide hands-on experiences. To register, call the DNR at (651) 296-6157 or toll free 1-888-(MINNDNR) 646-6367. The cost is $10 per family. Each family will receive a goodie bag. This program is best suited for those above age six.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, DNR's Becoming An Outdoors Woman Program, and Anoka Country Parks and Recreation are program sponsors.

All Becoming An Outdoors Woman program are listed on the DNR Web site at www.dnr.state.mn.us.
