Do you Pluck or not

Postby cinrds » Mon Oct 17, 2005 8:55 am

When you get home do you pluck your ducks and geese or do you just pull out the breast?

If you pluck is there a good way to do this?

Ducks - Breast em out, maybe legs if I am feeling like a bit more work

Geese - Breast, legs, and thighs, wings if I am feeling like a bit more work.

I'm a breast and leg man myself. Way too much work for the dinky amount of meat you get off one from plucking.

Breast them out!

Now on geese I save the leg and thigh and make a huge pot of stew of chili with it. The legs from 8 geese fill a zip lock bag! That's a lot of meat to throw away

I breast the birds out. If you want to pluck and not have it be a hassle, do most of the plucking right after you shoot the bird while its still warm. The feathers will come off much easier this way if you do it right out in the field. Leave the head and one fully feathered wing attached for bird ID should you get stopped by a warden. If you wait till you get home plan on spending a while plucking.

I breast them in early season, but pluck later on, after the pinfeathers have dissappeared.

depends on the size of the bird. Mallards, pintails, geese and some of the larger divers I will pluck, but on smaller birds like teal and buffies, I just breast em.
