SWLA Teal Hunt 2013 with Comeaux...

Postby Indaswamp » Sun Sep 22, 2013 2:14 pm

D Comeaux was gracious enough to invite da IndaBros. out for an old fashioned SWLA Rice field Teal choot. We had a Big time! The jokes started as soon as we got out the car to meet Comeaux, and Comeaux commented,"It's already started...we are gonna have fun this weekend!"

And that we did! I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard! :lol3: I cooked a big pot of Crawfish etouffee friday night since it was raining outside, and we pushed the backstrap on the grill to saturday night thinking the front would roll through and we'd have better weather. So many stories I can't remember them all! :lol3:
Image

First morning in da blind, it started off slow. the birds did not arrive until after 730am. Woods started us off with a nice shot on a flock that only he had a shot at as they favored the left side of the blind...
I laughed hard when I stepped down into the pit to find this:
Image
A MIDGET STEP!!! :lol3: :clapping: :clapping: And Woods had to use it! :clapping: :clapping:

As it started getting light, I looked over towards Comeaux's end of da blind and I see a strange looking silhouette. The young guy on side of me (Comeaux's nephew) has on a leafy head net. It Looks round and furry, and I start to chuckle....
He asks me- "OK, what?!!?!" He knew something was comin cause we had been joking with him all the previous night. I say, "Hey! That headnet you are wearing makes you look like the lion from the Wizard of OZ!" :lol3: :lol3: :lol3: :lol3:

We ended up with 8 teal Sat. morning...

Had some surprise us, one gun malfunction, and some poor shooting, should have had about 5-6 more.

About that malfunction, Comeaux's gun had a piece of trash in the trigger assembly and was having trouble cycling shells. His nephew was having trouble hitting birds, so I told Comeaux-"Just grab yourt newphew's gun.....HE AIN'T USING IT!" :lol3: :lol3: :lol3:

Couple more of Comeaux's relatives arrived mid day Sat. and the rain cleared out, the wind picked up. They went to the blind for an afternoon hunt and got 5 more...they shoulda had 10...but dat's teal huntin.

Sunday's Hunt was much better. We saw many more birds and larger flocks flying around. The north breeze was blowing, it was 66 degrees and I caught a chill on the back of my neck in the blind waiting for the first flock to show up over the deeks. We had some close calls and a missed opportunity on a flock of 30 buzzing behind us in range. We were beginning to think we were going to scratch, but with teal, when it happens, it seems like it is all at once. We racked up 12 teal in about an hour with multiple flocks working the deeks and finishing.

I swear...my cheeks hurt from laughing not long after we arrived at the cabin, and by friday night my sides were killing me! They told jokes we had never heard, and we told stories they had never heard. The one liners the next day were priceless!! :lol3:
We rode over to the lodge after our hunt saturday to meet up with Rick Hall and meet the Coyote. That was a neat deal indeed. The Coyote is a character and much more friendly in person than I had imagined. Sorry, no pics though as I forgot my camera in my blind bag.
I brought Rick Hall some boudin and a Barq's Root Beer I had promised him for over a year. (Long story on that) and I'm glad Rick got to come out to the cabin and visit Saturday night with us.
Overall, it was one of the more memorable teal hunts I have been on. Sunday, we had a flock of 4 commit and when Woods took the far left bird and folded it, the other three did what most teal do and flared straight up-that was a mistake as all three fell to the water. 4 birds in, 4 birds stayed. Comeaux's dog did great and found a sailer that I chipped and fluttered down to the overgrown pond levee. What an enjoyable weekend! Thanks for the invite Comeaux!!!! :clapping:  Hell of a trip Brah!! Makes me anxious for big duck season now!!

The opening paragraph made me think Jerry Clower was posting in swamp's place.
