Although our season opened on October 5th, I've not had a chance to get out ..... until today.
Really good weather this morning, low dark clouds and a stiff breeze out of the North. Got set-up with the wind at my back. Just a few minutes after legal shooting hours, had a little group of 5 teal come right into the spread, fighting the wind. I lucked out and scratched out 2 of them. Several minutes later had a pair of mallards come sailing directly into my spread and I shot 3 shells and knocked both of them down. About 20 minutes after the mallard pair, 3 pinnies passed just outside of the decoys and made a big swing around behind me and dropped straight into my deeks. They all had feet down and I fired all 3 shells and watched all 3 sprigs fly off (the Teague curse). It took about 45 minutes and a handful of misses before I had killed the last 3 birds. The final bird caught me by surprise as it came in from behind me and I shot it as it was going straight away. It wasn’t hit real well and sailed out about 90-100 yards and the dog made a nice retrieve. As the dog got close to the boat (last photo) I could tell is was a merg.
Anyway, it was fun to get out and shake off some of the rust!
