First Duck Hunt of 2013

Postby Locked&Loaded » Tue Oct 15, 2013 10:02 am

Although our season opened on October 5th, I've not had a chance to get out ..... until today.
Really good weather this morning, low dark clouds and a stiff breeze out of the North. Got set-up with the wind at my back. Just a few minutes after legal shooting hours, had a little group of 5 teal come right into the spread, fighting the wind. I lucked out and scratched out 2 of them. Several minutes later had a pair of mallards come sailing directly into my spread and I shot 3 shells and knocked both of them down. About 20 minutes after the mallard pair, 3 pinnies passed just outside of the decoys and made a big swing around behind me and dropped straight into my deeks. They all had feet down and I fired all 3 shells and watched all 3 sprigs fly off (the Teague curse). It took about 45 minutes and a handful of misses before I had killed the last 3 birds. The final bird caught me by surprise as it came in from behind me and I shot it as it was going straight away. It wasn’t hit real well and sailed out about 90-100 yards and the dog made a nice retrieve. As the dog got close to the boat (last photo) I could tell is was a merg. Anyway, it was fun to get out and shake off some of the rust!

Weekday hunts seem to be the best this year with all the people in the area. Glad to see someone is killing them out here!

Ha looking back at those pictures, the water is glassy calm. Honestly when I rolled out there in the dark this morning, the wind was whipping pretty good. By the time I was done, it was fairly clear and calm. I just figured it would make me sound tougher and give me more DHC street cred if it appeared I fought a mighty gale force wind to kill those ducks.

I just couldn't bring myself to put the merg in the duck pile for the photo op. I always feel obligated to apologize to my dog for having to retrieve one.

Nice.

6 ducks in a day. It's one my goals for the year.

With so many teal and woodies still to the north, I might have a chance.
