Excel Guru needed!

Postby go get the bird » Tue Oct 15, 2013 3:27 pm

I'm trying to write a single function that does the following:
If A1>0, B1=0, C1>0, D1=0, then sum of A1 & B1, if not, 0.
If A1>0, B1=0, C1=0, D1>0, then A1-D1, if not, 0.
If A1=0, B1>0, C1=0, D1>0, then sum B1 & D1, if not, 0
If A1=0, B1>0, C1>0, D1=0, then B1-C1, if not, 0.

It's for an accounting spreadsheet where the balance sheet data(A1 and B1) and adjustments(C1 & D1) are combined to get the adjusted trial balance.

Any takers?

I've no idea what a macro is. And no, doesn't need to be done tonight.

Just watched a crash course in macros- it's a no-go.

The spreadsheet is shared between me and 2 other students in google drive. I can't see where it has a macro function.

Gave it a quick shot with a nested IF(AND statement with the true logical function being your first set of criteria and the false function being a nested IF with the next criteria. Not sure if it'll do what you want it to but it seems to work from the little I've played with it this morning.

=IF(AND(A1>0, B1=0, C1>0, D1=0), A1+B1, IF(AND(A1>0, B1=0, C1=0, D1>0), A1-D1, IF(AND(A1=0, B1>0, C1=0, D1>0), B1+D1, IF(AND(A1=0, B1>0, C1>0, D1=0), B1-C1, "0"))))

I fiddled with the numbers a bit, got it working.

Next question: Lets say none of those criteria are met (there is only one cell in the range with data). How can you get it to display which ever cell in the range is >0 instead of displaying "0"? It only works now if there a x+y or x-y situation.

Nevermind, I just added more criteria.

Thanks for the help Weg!

You can even get into conditional formatting if you want to color specific cells if they are =, >, < a certain number

Not necessary, but thanks for the help.

This dilema was brought about because we are putting together an accounting spreadsheet that our instructor will make minor changes too, say an adjustment was recorded wrong, or the beginning balance of an account was off. All the numbers have to work when said changes are made. As of now, they are all working, at least through the adjusted trial balance. I'll work on the actual adjustments and the closing entries tonight.

Again, thanks for the :help: !!

:lol3: Not really. I still have to do the adjustments and closing entries, then produce a post-closing trial balance and an income statement. We didn't have to use complex functions. Simple a1+b1=c1 equations would have worked, and I suspect most of the class will take full advantage of that. I chose to do it the hard way.

7 nested IF Functions are enough to make anyones brain spin by what is trying to be accomplished. However, Excel 2007 and newer can handle up to 64
