Garden help....

Postby Slack Tide » Tue Nov 12, 2013 7:06 am

I remember my mom used to clip and save Marigolds, but I Don't remember what she did in the spring to get them going again.
I have some beautiful marigolds this year and it's time to pull them up. I'd like to save the heads but I am sure there is a way to do it properly...
Anyone know?

Try the better homes and gardens forum, Sally.

I'll ask my mom she saves them.
I hope someday someone remembers this old dog with kindness and gives me to a puppy.

Ask your mom if she has any good muffin recipes while you are at it!

Put the seeds (on the bottom of the flower, in the pic Betty posted) in a brown paper lunch bag, and put them in the fridge. We usually just throw them in the bag whole, and then open the "casing" in the spring when it's time to plant them. If you don't already,. plant some around in the garden. Marigolds discourage a lot of insect pests, and help attract bees as a bonus.

My Dad used to collect Marigolds from every one he could. He made some mighty fine Marigold wine!!!!!

I tried it, it, it did not work!

My work shop has a wood stove in it, but it's primarily cold in there unless I go light a fire (2x a week)....can I just leave them in there to skip the fridge?
I have them in the play area to help with the mosquitoes....I love the smell and they really do help.

Yep, that's fine. They keep better, and tend to germinate better if they get some cold. The shop is fine. Some people put them in the pantry or something, and they never get cold, and the germination the following year is usually pretty poor. But the paper bag is a must. Don't use plastic.
