ATV or SxS?

Postby t_baker » Sun Nov 17, 2013 3:28 pm

Wife and I decided we are going to purchase one or the other come spring. We have a golf cart now that we just cruise around on. I use it to get to a couple of the spots down the road that I dove/squirrel/coyote hunt. We will keep it.

What we are looking for is something for yard work, and hunting. I have a couple buddies that go to Hatfeild McCoy and the Badlands every year so I may ride a few trails with it. But that's not its purpose. I cut wood and have a 6x12 trailer that I can use to load wood in. I also have a 18 ft landscape trailer to haul it.

Stuck between a quad or a side by side. If I go side by side I will most likely get a Ranger. But if I go quad I really don't know what I want.

Help.

the new john deere gators are BA!!! granted, the store that brought them to be demo'ed brought em to a wedding reception.. you know you are in a small town when the police give you an escort to do donuts in the road.. there is a 4 seater, a 2 seater all purpose, and a 2 seater sport.. the sport will smoke the tires..

I have several 4 wheelers and a ranger myself. For working purposes, you will not beat the SXS. My Ranger is just the mid sized 400, but it's perfect for what I need it for. I can load 500 pounds of deer corn in the bed and go, or I can load it up with a chainsaw, Stihl combisystem with all attachments, ice chest and gas and whatever else I'll need. I'm not going to say that I won't own another 4 wheeler, but I'll always have a SXS.

IMO, sxs, no brainer. Like said, the mid size ranger is hard to beat. The 400 is nice but I'd suggest the 570 simply for the fuel injection.

I went with the ranger 500 a few years ago. Hauls anything and easier to carry several guys to the blind instead of making several trips or having a field full of wheelers. Best part is taking my nieces to watch the fields they are 3 and 4. Don't have to worry as much with the ride.

Only reason I went with the 400 instead of the 500 is because I can take a carburetor down and clean it if needed. I don't know anything about fuel injection.

Thanks guys. Is there a size difference in the machine when you get say a 570 vs the 900? Or do they just swap the motors?

Pretty sure the 570 is still considered the mid size unless something changed. Originally it was the 400 carbureted and the 500 fuel injected in the mid size class. I don't know if that changed when it bumped to the 570 though.

My biggest hold up is full size vs mid size I think.

I have a buddy with a new JD Gator and I do agree with possum. They are bad ass. I will price match. I don't want that bright JD green though. I would have to order a different color or camo.

If your needing to put 3 grown people in the cab or more than 500 pounds in the bed, go with the full size. If you will be riding in places with narrow roads or where you may have to make your own path around downed tree or other obstacle, go with the mid size. I can take mine places that the full sizes can't get only because mine is a little smaller and more maneuverable.

I dont like the weight of them. The drive shaft is noisy and they are slow as hell.

X2. My parents have one with the fully enclosed cab and they suck in the mud. There isn't enough top end speed to get enough momentum for most holes. It is nice to get in and cut on the AC in the summer and heat in the winter though.

x3, the Kubota is great if you were ranching and ONLY drove on roads. I've had a Ranger 800 HD, RZR 900xp, currently have a JD 825i. My dad has an electric Ranger, and a crew cab diesel Mule. Out of all of them the Gator has the best and smoothest ride, biggest bed, and feels to be of higher quality than the rest. The only real downside to the gator is that the seat is too narrow for 3 grown men, unless you hang off both sides a bit. I went with green and yellow for the novelty of it, and it was a bit cheaper.

Yeah I have been checking bed dimensions and the gator seems to have the biggest. That is another thing I am looking for in it.

We have a dune buggy we use for riding / taking a group out dove hunting. We use a truck for towing and hauling brush. We ride horses for trail riding and to round up cattle. Not saying this is a good way for you but it works for us. If I had to get a atv, I'd probably get a Kawasaki mule.

Go with the side by side.

1990s Cherokee, arb locked front and rear on 38.5" boggers and buy 10 grand worth of decoys :). I would love a utv but I couldn't justify spending 15 grand on one.

But in the utv world gators are the best. Hands down, we have them at work and they are pretty impressive
