Black or mottled

Postby Duck Nasty » Thu Nov 28, 2013 10:25 pm

Well I'm my 27 years of duck hunting I killed 1 of the 2 species I haven't had the opportunity to kill. I shot either a black duck or a mottled I am having a hard time with it. My most educated guess is a drake black duck with a little mallard in it. I am very proud of this bird and am going to be taking it to the taxidermist just want some clarification on what tells the differences between the two by some of you guys that get them more often than I do

The location in which it was shot will help answer this question. But, white on the speculum usually means mottled or a hybrid. Hard to tell without the bird in hand. Either way good work.

White at the bottom of the speculum, with a yellow bill.

Looks like a drake Mottled Duck to me.

Mottled duck, because it's on the east coast and you are in NC, florida duck, a sub species of the mottled duck might be a possibility. do you have pictures of the back of the bird laying on it's belly?

Just to confuse the matter even more. I've shot plenty of black ducks with a slight white trailing edge on the speculum....though not nearly as pronounced as yours.

I kill tons of blacks every year. A little white on the BOTTOM of the speculum is pretty normal. You start dealing with hybrids when you get white on the TOP of the speculum. I'd say that's a drake black. That said, I've never seen a mottled duck.

That is a 100% black duck...it is permissible to have a slight white trim on the spec (if you see item "C" on the chart that was posted above for black duck)...
Every other element of that bird is perfect black duck and if you look at the mottled bill, chest and face...it's much more mallard like and creamy...
Black duck for sure

I'll take a picture of that for you in the next few days. When I thaw it and start skinning it

There have been several other black ducks killed in this area. One of my friends hunted there yesterday and killed his first one at the same spot

Looks like a Black to me although the belly is a little light. I've never shot a Mottled so I'm for sure no expert.

Definately more mottleing on the back of yours Inda. More orange bill as well. Here's a Black. Don't have any other pics.

That's a black duck. Post a picture of the bird's throat and that'll remove all doubt.
