Red wing black bird. Not a duck.
I hope someday someone remembers this old dog with kindness and gives me to a puppy.

People are having trouble with these this year. Think that's the 3rd one I've seen.

Cold weather probably pushed them to places they aren't usually seen till after season.

Yes probably right, Last year I so didn't want to ask here but after 3 other experienced guys said hmmm I don't know and couldn't find on DU ID page I thought (crossed fingers) then posted it... quick reply and I was relieved I didn't shoot some protected species...

Do they not all have an "ivory tipped" bill? I guess I've never really looked at the one's I've killed.

I think it takes a couple years for it to show up. Could be totally wrong though.

^^^This^^^
I shot one earlier this year that did not have the ivory tips, or the pronounced difference in coloration of the feathers. Just kinda grey with a redish/brown head and those big-ol golden eyes.

Never understood why people struggle with the hen goldeneye so much. A friend of mine shot one last year and was about mortified when I told him it was a grebe. :lol3:

From the looks of the avatar, I'd be careful crossing your fingers.
